Historic Headstones and Antique Roses at Evergreen Cemetery
After the gold rush in the early 1890s in nearby Cripple Creek, the influx of money saw Evergreen Cemetery become home to enchanting mausoleums and impressive monuments. With its rolling verdant hills and breathtaking Pikes Peak views, it became an outdoor oasis, prompting people to decorate the gravesites with rose-covered trellises. So impressive was the beauty of Evergreen Cemetery that Ripley’s Believe It or Not deemed it the ‘largest outdoor rose garden in the world.’
Two of our own, Doris Duckworth and Vickie Sherwood will be highlighting Zebulon Pike’s Historic Preservation project. Mrs. Duckworth is a national Garden Club officer and will speak about the antique roses that grow in Evergreen Cemetery. Vickie Sherwood will speak about the historic headstones in the cemetery. Hear about all the great work Zebulon Pike is doing to help preserve this beloved cemetery.
